Greater Sudbury to Host – 2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series Game #4
The Sudbury Wolves are pleased to announce that the CIBC Canada Russia Series next season will be hosted by the team and the Sudbury Community Arena in Greater Sudbury on Monday November 13th. The last time an exhibition of this caliber was played in the Sudbury Arena was Monday November 25th, 2013 when Team Russia defeated Team OHL in a tight-knit 3-2 victory.
The six-game series features regional league teams of Canadian National Junior Team candidates competing against the Russian National Junior Team and is an integral part of the identification process for Team Canada prior to the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. The 2017 event will open with two games in the WHL, followed by two OHL matchups, and ending with a pair hosted by the QMJHL.
Dmitry Sokolov, the Wolves goal scoring leader with 42, suited up for the Team Russia this past November when he faced Team OHL and Wolves Captain Kyle Capobianco in North Bay at the renovated Memorial Gardens. “Playing for your country, seeing your friends is always special,” said Sokolov, “we play hard for the fans and show what we can do. It’s nice to score on your teammate too.” Capobianco, a veteran and leader having played 4 full seasons with the Wolves commented, “It’s like getting to see what other players are doing, what they are working on and what they expect of themselves in an environment that pits the best competition against each other in a one game feature with eyes on the World Jrs. Getting to play in the Bay was special because my billets and parents could all come watch.”
Sudbury Wolves VP of Marketing + Development, Andrew Dale said, “bringing quality events like this to showcase the NHLs future stars in Greater Sudbury is something that fits with the long term goals of the organization which are to attract quality world class entertainment and great hockey for our season ticket holders and local fans alike. In addition, we will work with the city’s tourism specialists to create attractive packages for the Northern neighbours to visit the region. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate the likelihood of several of our key players being featured prominently in the nationally televised game.”
Wolves fans will remember the success Marcus Foligno had in this feature game in 2010 when he played, impressing Hockey Canada evaluators, earning an invitation to the pre-Christmas training camp, making the World Junior team in 20010-11 and winning a silver medal for Canada. A local success story we can all cheer about!
“As a Canadian company, we are so proud to bring the action of the CIBC Canada Russia Series rivalry to communities across the country through our partnership with the CHL,” said Stephen Forbes, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, CIBC. “This is a special year as we celebrate Canada and CIBC’s shared 150th birthday and we look forward to cheering on Team Canada and our next generation of hockey heroes as they showcase their talent in this anticipated annual showdown.”
Ahead of the 2017 series, CIBC and the CHL are excited to unveil a newly redesigned logo mark. The league and bank collaborated closely to develop a more modern interpretation of the logo to symbolize a new era for the Series while embracing the historical rivalry between these two countries.
