The Sudbury Wolves closed out the 2017-18 season at home Friday night with a thrilling game against the Barrie Colts. After the Wolves climbed back from a 4-1 deficit, the Colts overcame the Wolves adding two more to take a 6-4 victory. Goal scorers for the Wolves included Macauley Carson, Drake and Darian Pilon, and Kyle Rhodes.
The Wolves thanked both overage players, Kyle Rhodes and Doug Blaisdell, prior to tonight’s game in recognition of their strong leadership to the organization. Both players ended their careers at home with a strong showing, as Rhodes picked up a goal and Blaisdell recorded two assists.
The Colts had a solid first period as they scored three unanswered goals and out-shot the Wolves 18-11. Lucas Chiodo netted a goal just over two minutes into the frame to open the scoring for the visitors. Former wolf, Dmitry Sokolov, scored a highlight-reel backhand goal for his 50th goal of the season midway through the period. Sokolov was given a standing ovation by fans prior to the game after being recognized for his achievements during his time in Sudbury. A goal from Andrei Svechnikov stretched the Colts lead to 3-0 late in the period.
Emotions ran high between the two central division rivals as Drake Pilon dropped the gloves with Tyler Tucker in a solid tilt for Drake early in the second. Halfway through the period, Jason Willms made it 4-0 as he tipped the puck past McGrath. A surge from the Wolves to tie the game began with Macauley Carson as he accepted a drop pass from Shane Bulitka before sending it into the net. The Wolves went into the dressing room trailing 4-1 after two periods.
A wild third period began with goals from the Pilon twins, as Darian cut the Colts lead in half less than a minute into the third. Next, Drake Pilon put the Wolves within one as he scored his third short-handed goal of the season. With that goal, Drake and Alexey Lipanov are now tied as the Wolves’ short-handed goal leaders. Just over halfway through the frame, Kyle Rhodes released a hard shot from the blueline that beat Kai Edmonds to tie the game at 4. Power play opportunities for the Colts were the difference maker in the final minutes, as Aaron Luchuk and Svechnikov both scored on the man-advantage to end the game with a 6-4 final.
Rhodes was named the first star of the night, Blaisdell was named second star, and Sokolov was named third.
