Wolves Fall to Steelheads

Jessica Van Staalduinen

The Sudbury Wolves played their final game before the break in Mississauga Sunday afternoon as they took on the Steelheads. In an offensive outing by the Steelheads, the Wolves fell by a 7-2 final with Darian Pilon and Kirill Nizhnikov notching goals for the Wolves.

The game marked the return of David Levin and Kyle Rhodes to the Wolves line-up who have been out of the line-up for a number of weeks.

The first period was a quiet one between the two rivals with one goal coming from Trent Fox who sent the puck over Jake McGrath’s shoulder. As the Steelheads celebrated the teddy bear toss, the teams had the chance to re-group following the goal. The Wolves ended the period trailing the Steelheads 1-0.

A total of six goals were scored in the second period starting with two goals from the Steelheads from Michael Little and Jacob Cascagnette. Darian Pilon put the Wolves on the board to cut the Steelheads lead to 3-1. In the final minutes of the frame, the teams exchanged goals. The Steelheads scored first short-handed from Ryan McLeod. With 17 seconds remaining in the period, Kirill Nizhnikov scored a power play goal to end the period at 4-2.

There was continued pressure from the Steelheads in the third period, as Owen Tippett scored a minute into the period. After Tippett’s goal, Marshall Frappier came in to relieve McGrath in net. The Steelheads added two more goals, both from Nicolas Hague, to extend their lead to 7-2. Final shots on net were 40-25 in favour of the Steelheads.

The Wolves will now take a break for the holidays before returning to action on Thursday, December 28th when the team travels to Barrie to take on the Colts. Game time is 7:30 pm.
