The Sudbury Wolves held their year-end player awards Monday to recognize players for their individual achievements this season. The banquet was held at the Caruso Club with a small and intimate gathering of players and team staff to remember the year for all the good and productive things that transpired over the 2016-2017 season. Not surprisingly, Dmitry Sokolov, the team’s leading scorer stood out at the year-end banquet with 48 goals on the season and a consistent playoff performance.
The season had its ups and downs, and while the sting of being ousted from the playoffs remains very fresh, the team and players were grateful for successes that came with this season. The Wolves lost a hard fought and evenly contested series against the Oshawa Generals. The team fell 3-1 in game 6 on home ice and the Generals took the series 4 games to 2.
Shortly before training camp, the season kicked off with a significant change in ownership that led to the best start the team has had in 22 years since the 1994-1995 season. Successful seasons individually, invaluable playoff experience for returning veterans and a strong sense of community pride was palpable in the Sudbury Arena toward the end of the season, especially with the return of Wolves Playoff Hockey. Credit to the players’ tenacity and determined effort to dig deep and get the best of themselves when things mattered most this year.
The 45th fifth season was a solid season that everyone can be proud of playing a part in. From season ticket holder smiles, to student volunteers, this was a season to be remembered. There were many firsts, including Dario Zulich’s rookie season as owner. While certainly up for consideration, the award to Rookie of the year still went to the players!
