Wolves Defeat Hounds

The Sudbury Wolves played a very rare Wednesday night home game as they hosted the Soo Greyhounds for the final game in the season series between the two clubs.  On the line was the Bell Challenge Cup which is awarded to the winner of the season series.  The Wolves needed at least a tie to claim the title, and with the 5 – 3 win, they earned valuable two points and possession of the Bell Challenge Cup.

The Wolves also welcomed back BRODY SILK and JEFF CORBETT to the lineup.   SILK was coming off his 12-game suspension, while Corbett returned from injury.

The Pack opened up an early 1 – 0 lead after forward MICHAEL SGARBOSSA (DEREK SCHOENMAKERS, CHARLIE DODERO) scored his 36th goal of the season at 3:22 of the first period.

The Greyhounds got on the board at 2:49 of the second frame when David Quesnele scored the equalizer to make the score 1 – 1.  Former Greyhound MICHAEL KANTOR (SGARBOSSA) gave the Wolves the 2 – 1 lead after netting shorthanded marker at 7:20 of the period.  JOSH LEIVO (SGARBOSSA, JOSH MCFADDEN) scored his 23 of the season just past the midway point of the frame for the 3 – 1 Wolves lead.

In the third period, SAM SCHUTT (JACOB HARRIS, MACKENZIE BRAID) made it 4 – 1 Wolves early on, however, the Greyhounds pulled back within 2 after Nick Cousins scored on the powerplay.  The Wolves scored their second shorthanded marker of the evening courtesy of MCFADDEN (BRODY SILK. KANTOR) to give the Wolves a commanding 5 – 2 lead late in the third period.  Andrew Fritsch added a powerplay goal in the final minute of the period but it wasn’t enough as the Wolves went on to win by a final of 5 – 3.

JOEL VIENNEAU was given the start in goal and was terrific in making 34 saves for the win.  Jack Campbell was in goal for the Hounds and made 27 saves for the loss.

The game’s three stars were: 1st Star – JOEL VIENNEAU, 2nd Star – MICHAEL SGARBOSSA, 3rd Star – JOSH MCFADDEN.  The Dickies Hardest Working Player was awarded to MICHAEL KANTOR.

The Wolves will return to action on Friday, February 17, 2012 when they host the visiting Niagara Ice Dogs.  Game time is 7:35pm.
