Luukkonen Sets Franchise Record for Shutouts as Wolves Blank Bulldogs

The Sudbury Wolves wrapped up their weekend on the road Saturday at the FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton where they faced-off against the Bulldogs. It was a milestone moment for Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen who set the Wolves’ single season record for shutouts after helping the pack secure a 4-0 win. The shutout also ties him with Mike Smith, Patrick Ehelechner and Franky Palazzese who each had 6 shutouts in their career with the Wolves. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen had a perfect performance making all 41 saves for the shut-out. The Wolves’ offence was a force as Cole Candella and Adam Ruzicka each had multipoint nights. Cole Candella recorded three assists while Adam Ruzicka potted a goal and tallied two helpers. Other Wolves’ goal scores included Peter Stratis, Ryan O’Bonsawin and Nolan Hutcheson each with one marker. Final shots on goal were 41-20 in favour of Hamilton.

In the first period, Peter Stratis opened the scoring for the Wolves just over two minutes in. He fired in a wrist shot on the power play to give the pack an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs outshot the Wolves 16-9 but were unable to tie it up before the end of period.

Ryan O’Bonsawin and Adam Ruzicka extended the Wolves lead in the second period to put the score at 3-0 for Sudbury. Ryan O’Bonsawin’s goal was sent in off a wrist-shot at the face-off dot while Adam Ruzicka buried his own rebound. The Bulldogs continued to outshoot the Wolves but were unsuccessful and were left to trail 3-0 after 40 minutes of play.

In the final frame, the Wolves continued to lay pressure on the Bulldogs, however, they were unable to make the comeback. Zachary Roy got the nod to head to the bench for the extra Bulldogs attacker in the final minutes of the game. The Wolves held on to the puck where Nolan Hutcheson guided the puck into the empty net to secure a 4-0 win. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Adam Ruzicka and Cole Candella earned the three stars of the night.

The Wolves will return to action at home Friday night when they hit the ice for a rematch against the Bulldogs at 7:05pm for the final home game of the regular season. Great seats are still available for purchase online at sudburywolves.com
