Wolves Double Up on Steelheads

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon for ice fishing in Mississauga where the Wolves took on the Steelheads at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre. In an entertaining showdown between the two rivals, the Sudbury Wolves were the ones to come out on top, catching a 2-1 win with final shots on goal 41-38 in favour of Mississauga. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen had a near flawless performance making 40 saves which earned himself first star of the game.

It was a slow start on Sunday afternoon for both the Wolves and the Steelheads. Just under the midway mark, Quinton Byfield had a nice shot going into the open net on the gloveside but was robbed by rookie goaltender Joe Ranger who snagged it out of the air. The Steelheads took a 1-0 lead late in the period to open the scoring with a goal from Cole Schwindt who roofed it into the net past Luukkonen.

A back and forth second period led to no goals scored after 40 minutes of play. Shots on goal sat at 31 a piece with the Steelheads holding onto their 1-0 lead.

Early on in the final frame Peter Stratis and Nick McHugh were both sent to the box for dropping the gloves following a small pushing match. After energizing the Wolves’ bench, the pack rallied together and regrouped. Nolan Hutcheson buried a nice pass from Quinton Byfield to tie the game at 1. Battling hard, the Steelheads could not shake the Wolves to take back their lead. Just over the halfway mark, Adam Ruzicka slammed in a rebound past Ranger off Owen Robinson’s initial shot. Unable to score, in the final 2 minutes, the Steelheads gave their goalie the the nod to head to the bench for the extra man advantage. Luukkonen stood tall between the pipes to help secure a 2-1 win over their Central Division rivals.

The Wolves will look to continue their hard play when they return to action at the Sudbury Arena on Friday, February 1st when they host the Windsor Spitfires at 7:05pm. It will be the first game of a double header weekend where they will host the Sarnia Sting at 7:05pm on Saturday. Tickets are available at the Sudbury Arena Box Office or at greatersudbury.ca/tickets.
