Congratulations Connor Burgess!

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the OHL Academic Players of the Month for November, 2013, which includes Blake Speers of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Owen MacDonald of the London Knights, Connor Burgess of the Sudbury Wolves, and Andrew Abou-Assaly of the Ottawa 67’s.

West Division:  The West Division Academic Player of the Month for November is Soo Greyhounds’ rookie Blake Speers.  Recently named to Team Ontario for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, the 16-year-old Sault Ste. Marie native and last year’s NOHA Player of the Year is a Grade 11 student at St. Mary’s College.  He has earned an outstanding average of over 90% enrolled in a full scholastic schedule of four courses, all at the University preparation level.  Midterm reported marks include a high of 97% in Introduction to Financial Accounting, followed by 87% in both Personal Fitness, and Healthy Active Living.  Perhaps Blake’s most outstanding academic achievement is his success in Grade 12 Advanced Functions.  Despite only being a Grade 11 student, Blake has advanced his studies to the point where he is taking Grade 12 courses one year early, and has a grade of 91% in Advanced Functions. The Greyhounds are proud of Blake’s performance as it is a  “prime example of how a student-athlete in our Program can achieve elite success both on and off the ice, even while facing a grueling academic and hockey schedule.”

Midwest Division:  The Midwest Division Academic Player of the Month for November is London Knights’ forward Owen MacDonald.  The 17-year-old Elora native is excelling in each of his courses at London’s Blyth Academy. The Knights could not be more thrilled with Owen’s work ethic both on the ice and in the classroom so far this season and are excited to see where it will take him the rest of the year.

Central Division: The Central Division Academic Player of the Month for November is Connor Burgess of the Sudbury Wolves.  The 17-year-old Sudbury native and second year forward was the 2012-13 Ivan Tennant Memorial Award winner as the OHL’s Top Academic High School player and has continued to excel again academically this season while carrying an average of 90% in his University preparation level courses at LaSalle Secondary.  Burgess also led all OHL players in Movember fundraising and finished sixth overall in the entire CHL with $2,475 raised to combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges.

East Division: The East Division Academic Player of the Month for November is 17-year-old, left winger Andrew Abou-Assaly of the Ottawa 67’s.  Andrew is from Ottawa and attends his home school carrying a full Grade 12 course load at the University level where he currently has an 88% average. Andrew works extremely hard to balance hockey and school and is viewed by his teachers and team as a model student.  Prior to the OHL, Abou-Assaly was named the 2012 OEMHL Player of the Year for the Ottawa Jr. 67’s.
