The Sudbury SuperWolves hosted Superhero Night Friday night against the Saginaw Spirit in support of the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer (NOFCC). The Wolves played like superheroes, defeating the Spirit 7-3 in front of 4,301 fans at the Sudbury Arena.
The first period got off to a quick start as RYAN VALENTINI scored less than 2 minutes into the game to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. MIKKEL AAGAARD and KYLE CAPOBIANCO added the helpers on the opening goal. After the Spirit tied the game at 1, BRADY PATAKI answered back 20 seconds later to put the Wolves back in the lead. After the first period, the Wolves led 2-1with shots on goal being16-9 in favour of the Wolves.
In the second, the Wolves started the period strong, scoring 3 goals in 5 minutes to give them a commanding 5-1 lead. ALAN LYSZCZARCZYK, AAGAARD and DANNY DESROCHERS added the goals for the home team. Saginaw responded with 2 goals before the end of the frame to make it 5-3 heading into the third and final frame. Shots on goal after two periods were 33-31 for Sudbury.
The Wolves continued their strong play in the third period, extending their lead and clinching the win. REAGAN O’GRADY scored his first goal of the season with DAVID LEVIN and PATRICK MURPHY picking up the assists. MICHAEL PEZZETTA added another for the Wolves 30 seconds later to seal the victory for the home team. TROY TIMPANO was exceptional between the pipes for the SuperWolves, stopping 41 shots and earning first star honours. Final shots were 44-40 in favour of the Spirit.
