Wolves Select Forwards in CHL Import Draft

The Sudbury Wolves are pleased to announce the selection of two offensive forwards in the 2012 CHL Import Draft held today across Canada’s three CHL junior leagues.

With the Wolves’ first selection, 27th overall, the Wolves drafted DOMINIK KUBALIK, a 16-year-old left-winger from the Plzen junior team in the Czech Republic.   The younger brother of Columbus Blue Jackets prospect TOMAS KUBALIK, Dominik is regarded as one of the best young prospects in his age group.    At 6’1”, 175 lbs, KUBALIK uses his size to attack the net from the wing and is regarded as a skilled goal scorer with a hard accurate shot.   KUBALIK had excellent offensive numbers last season including: 22 goals, 16 assists for 38 points in 20 games for the Plzen U18 team.  KUBALIK was promoted to the U20 league where he added another 11 goals and 6 assists for 17 points in 24 league games in the top junior league in the Czech Republic.    KUBALIK has already caught the eye of many NHL scouts that have already begun to identify top European prospects for the 2013 NHL draft.   KUBALIK will turn 17 years of age in August.

With the Wolves’ second selection, 39th overall, the Wolves drafted DOMINIK KAHUN, a 16-year-old centreman from the Mannheim junior team in Germany’s DNL league.   KAHUN, 5’8”, 165 lbs, led the DNL junior league in scoring with 21 goals, 36 assists for 57 points in 36 games.   KAHUN has outstanding speed and vision and is considered a power play specialist.   KAHUN  centered a line with LEON DRAISAITL who was selected 2ND overall in the CHL Import Draft by Prince Albert of the Western Hockey League.   The dynamic duo (Kahun & Draisaitl) helped to lead the Mannheim Jr. team to the DNL league championship.   KAHUN also represented the German national team at the U17 Tournament held in Windsor in January and at the U18 Tournament held in Brno, Czech Republic in April.    The Wolves are looking for KAHUN to be the ‘play-making compliment’ to goal-scoring forward KUBALIK when the two new import players arrive in Sudbury.  Kahun turns 17 years of age on July 2nd.

“Kubalik is the forward that we traded-up to select so we were pleased to see that he was still there for us at #27 overall” notes Wolves’ GM Blaine Smith.  “Kubalik is a skilled goal-scoring winger that will battle for pucks along the wall and will drive the net.   He played in the senior league as a 16-year-old last season proving that he can handle himself against older players.  We are confident that Dominik will be an offensive winger for our team.”

“Kahun is a very exciting player to watch” adds Smith.  “Dominik has great vision.  He makes excellent passes and any winger will enjoy playing on his line.  He controls the puck extremely well, especially on the power play.   Dominik is an excellent compliment to Kubalik and we see the two forwards developing here and generating significant offence once they adjust to the OHL game.   By drafting these young forwards at just 16 years of age, our coaching staff will have more time to work with them and develop their skills, as we expect our two young import prospects to be with us for the next three seasons.”

The young forwards are expected to join their new Wolves’ teammates in August when the Sudbury Wolves travel to Russia to participate in the JUNIOR CLUB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP in Omsk, Siberia.   The Wolves will be representing Canada at the 10-nation world championship event from August 18th – 26th.    Wolves’ fans will be able to see the Wolves’ newest additions on September 1st when the Wolves hold their 2012-13 Try-out Camp at the Sudbury Arena.
